Is Laser Hair Removal Effective on Dark Skin?

Although laser hair removal is arguably one of the most effective hair removal methods, many people hold to the myth that it can work effectively for different skin types but not dark ones. Many people believe that using the hair removal method does not bring the desired results, but this is something that can only be referred as history and not news.

Laser hair removal method has gone through many changes and the process has become highly effective and especially considering the high level of technology employed during the sessions. For this very reason, dark skinned people stand a chance to benefit from this procedure in just the same way as those with other skin types.

The dark skin confuses melanin when absorbing the light

According to the past procedures, results have shown that the complexity of using laser treatment is dependent on the reaction of the skin and therefore we will have to look beyond the dark skin when approaching the procedure. However Dark skins are complex to treat and this is due to the way the laser is intended to work. In general, hair follicles are supposed to absorb the lasers and once this is done the follicle suffers the damage resulting in success.

For this to happen, the laser should be able to pick the hair follicles and distinguish them from the skin and this is where the difficulty of treating dark skin comes in since it is hard to distinguish between the two. When treating dark skinned people, melanin absorbs the laser both in the follicles and the skin and due to the volume of the skin; it absorbs the light more contrary to how laser hair removal is designed to work.

Advanced technology has brought a solution

When using laser on dark skin, the results are likely to be negative and especially due to the absorption of the laser light into the skin. There are no positive results obtained from the procedure and in many cases, the skin is damaged thus becoming discolored, getting burnt or even developing Keloids. The amazing news however is that the technological advancement has helped in coming up with different kinds of lasers which could be used on people with different hair and skin types.

Some of the available methods include the cooling of the skin to help avert any injuries. Under this method a chilled plate or two sapphire plates (with water flowing between them) are used to help in the cooling process. Additionally, your doctor could use a spray for cooling by evaporation and this shield the skin from laser beam burns. Long wavelength laser lights are also used on dark skin, since they can easily penetrate the epidermis to damage the follicles.

Different types of lasers

As aforementioned, technology advancement has helped develop different types of lasers and this has made the procedure more successful and safe. Some of the most popular lasers include YAG and diode but the former offers the best results when it comes to the dark skin. It is important to gather sufficient information prior to the procedure and you should be able to discuss the available options with your clinic before subjecting your body to the laser hair removal. This will help you to understand the laser safety and success of the procedure while at the same time giving you the guarantee of what to expect.
